"I'll Never Love Again" is a song from the 2018 movie A Star Is Born, performed by its stars Lady Gaga and managing director Bradley Cooper whose character sings the final chorus in the flashback scene. The soundtrack contained both versions of the song including the extended version that featured Gaga as the sole performer. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere. Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.

The song has received widespread critical acclaim and has reached the top of the Slovakian digital charts, the top-10 of the record charts in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the digital charts of Hellenic republic, combined-Europe, Grand duchy of luxembourg and Spain. "I'll Never Love Again" received a gimmicky hit radio release in French republic as the album'due south third unmarried on May 27, 2019. It won the Grammy Honor for Best Vocal Written for Visual Media, a yr after the album'due south pb unmarried "Shallow" won in the same category.

Background and limerick [edit]

When Gaga was getting ready to film the final scene of A Star Is Born, where she sings "I'll Never Beloved Again", the singer got a telephone call that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her last moments of Stage Iv cancer. Gaga left the set and drove to meet Durham, but she arrived ten minutes subsequently her friend died. She asked Durham's husband if she should return to filming; he replied, "Y'all've gotta do what Sonja would want yous to exercise", then she returned to the set. Co-star and director Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga'south loss just Gaga was adamant about finishing the scene, so she stepped on the ready and sang "I'll Never Love Again". The vocalizer said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic gift that 24-hour interval and I took information technology with me to [the] gear up, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very aforementioned day within an hour."[1]

Along with the motion-picture show version, the soundtrack also contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the vocal with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[2] [three] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[4] The song is performed in the key of K major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per minute in common time. It follows a chord progression of Gadd2–Em7–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and Gadd2–Em7(no3)–Cmaj9/E–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga'due south vocals span from Gthree to Due east5.[v] Brian Truitt of USA Today described the song every bit a "weepy" carol.[6]

Release and performance [edit]

The song was first chosen as the third unmarried from the soundtrack on May 27, 2019 in French republic, where it was serviced to contemporary striking radio stations.[7] After soundtrack release, the song debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 nautical chart in the United States[eight] and has since sold 226,000 copies in the country, while accumulating 66 1000000 streams.[nine] Additionally, the song has reached the top ten position in Republic of hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the top ten of digital charts in Greece, Spain and Luxembourg, reaching the chart tiptop in Slovakia.

Critical reception [edit]

The vocal received universal acclamation. In her review of the film, Melina Newman of Billboard chosen the ballad "stunning".[10] The magazine's Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga's operation of "I'll Never Love Once more" as the moving-picture show'south best scene and wrote, "Non only are the lyrics devastatingly cute, simply Gaga/Marry showcases her total, skyscraper-high range."[eleven] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the song to Harry Nilsson'southward "Without You" and Eric Carmen's "All past Myself", and complimented Gaga's "former-schoolhouse finesse, timing, emotionality and lung ability".[12] Pitchfork 's Larry Fitzmaurice chosen the song a "stunning, heart-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... even though 'I'll Never Beloved Over again' is plenty constructive on its own, the dialogue-included version of the song dramatically cuts out in its final seconds the same way the motion-picture show does: jumping back in time from Gaga'south fourth dimension-stopping operation to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that only enhances the vocal's emotional quotient".[13]

In his motion picture review, Ty Burr of The Boston Earth said Gaga'south "climactic memorial" performance of the song "will leave you a soggy mess whether you like information technology or not".[fourteen] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the song would earn Gaga an Academy Award nomination for All-time Original Song.[15] USA Today 's Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Love Again,' the pic'south devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her own Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about love and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. It's a transcendent accomplishment that could single-handedly net the singer-turned-actress her first Oscar, reminding u.s.a. yet once more that she'due south one of the best vocalists right now in any genre, pop or otherwise."[16]
